Remedy For Insomnia - How to Use Light Therapy to Overcome Insomnia

Light, and sunlight in particular, are your best friends when it comes to relieving insomnia.

That's because light regulates melatonin, a brain chemical that is responsible for controlling body temperature. When your body temperature follows normal rhythms of day and night, you are more likely to sleep well.

The way to set your body temperature to a normal rhythm is to expose it to sunlight in the early morning. If you aren't able to do that or if get too little exposure to sunlight in general, your body clock doesn't know when to shut down and sleepless nights can result.

When you find yourself having trouble falling asleep, don't reach for a sleeping pill, instead go out and get some sun the next morning.

Here's exactly what to do.

As soon as you wake up in the morning, open the drapes or shades and let the light in. If possible, take a walk in the early morning sun. Avoid using dark glasses which prevent the sunlight from getting to your eyes.

To be fully effective you need about 1 hour exposure to indirect early morning sunlight and about 15 minutes to direct early morning sunlight.

An alternative if you don't live in a sunny climate or if you have to go to work before sunrise - you can sit in front to a full spectrum light box as soon as you wake up for at least 30 minutes.

One reason this therapy works is because it sets your body clock by releasing melatonin. Researchers in New York have found that light therapy works for many people who suffer from occasional insomnia. But for chronic insomnia it may not be enough.

For chronic insomnia I recommend a revolutionary new insomnia relief program that I've recently come across. It's getting rave reviews from many of my clients. Click the highlighted text to get the details.
